A Decade Of Excellence 2015 by Dithyrambic Singers

If there’s something Dithyrambic Singers can boast about, this KL-based semi-professional choir should be pointing at the fact that they have to come to a decade in their running now. Having a wealth of experience in performances and competitions locally and internationally garnered in the ten years since their start, the choir have taken to showcasing this in their recent concert with the telling title A Decade of Excellence at the Damansara Performing Arts Centre on October 17th and 18th.

And what a fascinating concert it was--a performance in two hours with an array of songs, each one an delight to the senses, bout audio and visual, with performers decked in costumes in movements to the music. Just as how choral music in history were shaped by songs of praise to a higher power, the concert began first with a hymn--Exultate Deo-- as if to first set the mood with a subtle beginning.

From there we were swept through various pieces. On top of hymns there were songs with Southeast Asian roots such as Suriram and Balaygi, as well as contemporary pieces. I imagine this was as though Dithyrambic Singers were trying to make a statement, in aiming to be an active model choir that is proud of its Malaysian identity. And truly a statement they should be proud enough to claim, as the performance was delivered beautifully, as if to say the ten years traced by the choir has forged them into the force they are today.

Perhaps my favorite piece was the final one which drew the curtain, entitled A Land Far Away. As a dark, somber piece, emotions ran wild with members of the choir going that extra mile in tending expressions; this lending itself to a very unique piece. As I’m told, the song was based off a Japanese poem and was composed by a previous member of the Dithyrambic Singers as well. How marvelous!

It was certainly a night to be remembered; and with a decade on their backs, this choir won’t be forgotten anytime soon.

Congratulations Dithyrambic Singers on a successful concert and on your tenth year anniversary! Do continue to serenade us with sweet music for decades to come!

SINGING IN UNISON: The Dithyrambic Singers should get the recognition and credit that is due to them

Dithyrambic Singers
invited to perform at the prestigious Carnegie Hall

THE Dithyrambic Singers (DS) may not be a common household name yet. One of the reasons could be their tongue-twisting moniker (dithyrambic basically means wild and boisterous and is also pertaining to dithyramb, an ancient Greek hymn sung in honour of Dionysus - the God of wine and fertility).

Also, their field of classical choir may not be that popular yet with members of the public, but this choir group is making waves already on the international stage. Most recently, members of the choir were invited to perform at the prestigious Carnegie Hall by Distinguished Concerts International in New York City (DCINY) to participate in the New York Premiere of the Concert Version of Eric Whitacre's The City and The Sea.

"I was studying last year in the States, my first year in choral conducting at California State University in Los Angeles, when I went to a masterclass by Eric Whitacre," said the Carnegie Hall trip coordinator and choir member Vincent Kang. "Somehow, I managed to talk to him and he asked for a recording of any choir performances in Malaysia." Kang handed Whitacre, an established musician, a copy of DS' A Choral Journey.

"It's a raw recording, with no remastering or tweaking, of our live performance," said Kang. Well, it worked. Whitacre was impressed and got a number of them to be invited to perform by DCINY.

"The Dithyrambic Singers received this invitation because of the quality and high level of musicianship demonstrated by the singers and the exceptional recommendations given by Vincent Kang and his choral colleagues," said DCINY artistic director and principal conductor Dr Jonathan Griffith. "It is quite an honour just to be invited to perform in Carnegie Hall. These wonderful musicians not only represent a high quality of music and education, but they also become ambassadors for the entire community. This is an event of extreme pride for everybody and deserving of the community's recognition and support."

A total of 13 DS members made the trip - on their own penny - and were in New York from April 14 to 17 (the concert date). "It was quite a strange and exciting experience," said DS tenor sectional leader and piano accompanist Shah Johan. "The first day of rehearsals, we were not really that comfortable and were unused to the Isaac Stern Auditorium's acoustics."

"The acoustics were so good, if a pin dropped on stage, you could hear it at the back!" said Kang.

"There's no room for error at all," agreed Johan.

"But Whitacre was nice. He was funny and professional and kind," said Melissa, another member of the choir who made the trip. "He told us the stories for the inspirations of the music, and that was nice."

By the second day, the DS members had already found their feet and delivered a performance to remember at the Isaac Stern Auditorium. The members all related the experience with enthusiasm, yet this is not the first time they have performed at an international stage. In fact, in November 2008, they were crowned Grand Prix Champion at the Busan Choral Festival & Competition in Korea. In July of that year, they won the Gold and became Champion for the Open Mixed Choir, Gold for Folklore A Capella as well as the Grand Final Special Jury Prize at the 21st Century International Choral Festival in Suzhou, China.

For a full list of their achievements, go to their blog at http://dithyrambic-singers.blogspot.com/.

The choir was the brainchild of Ian Lim Kean Seng who is now DS choral artistic director and conductor. DS recruits young choir singers from colleges and universities. They also perform occasionally at the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP) as well in events. Despite classical choir not being something that is as popular as say, mainstream music, indie bands or even classical music, which has a regular venue, the members of DS has a positive outlook on things, no doubt boosted by their recent trip to Carnegie Hall.

"I think that what we need would probably be a show or a carnival for classical choir," said Kang. "A festival for classical choir, held somewhere in town, maybe at DFP."

Well, if they can get to Carnegie Hall, maybe it's time we open up DFP for groups such as DS to show Malaysia what the world has been recognising all this while.

News: The Dithyrambic Singers show why it is a group to watch out for

The Star (Malaysia): The Dithyrambic Singers show why it is a group to watch out for
Thursday March 26, 2009

By OH ING YEEN

IF YOU think that choir members just stand still and sing at concerts, the Dithyrambic Singers will prove you wrong.

Adding elements of drama to their singing, the group delivered a performance that was an eye-opener, particularly to those new to the choir scene. Many in the audience were stunned when some of the choir members performed a tribal war dance, howling in agony, sobbing hysterically and screaming in madness.

The play of light created a dramatic effect to set the mood for the songs the choir rendered. There were also several costume changes, with the members looking smart in shades of black and red, white and blue, as well as traditional Malaysian motifs.

Titled A Choral Voyage, the performance, held at the KL Performing Arts Centre (KLPac) last weekend, was the choir’s first full recital. The choir was founded in 2005.

The group performed more than 15 songs during the concert, and highlights included the ancient tribal war-inspired Bal-laygi and the thought–provoking A Land Far Away, both of which provided the choir the opportunity to incorporate drama elements.

The latter was composed by the choir’s associate member Ng Shyh Poh with the aim of conveying the message of the brutalities of war through the voice of the victims. Six choir members each took on different roles as victims of war and acted out the emotions that resulted from the horror they had experienced — agony, sadness, fear, and even madness.

The audience was transported to the grasslands of Mongolia by the traditional Mongolian folk song Ba Jun Zan as the choir members mimicked the sound of galloping horses to portray the vigour of Genghis Khan’s famous eight steeds.

A Glimpse of Malaysian brought a sense of familiarity to the audience with its medley of five Malaysian folk songs that showcased the uniqueness of the local culture, including songs we grew up with, such as Geylang Si Paku Geylang.

The Dithyrambic Singers emerged Grand Prix Champion at the 2008 Busan Choral Festival and Competition in November 2008, on the heels of its victorious participation in the 21st Century International Choral Festival, Orientale Concentus, held in Suzhou, China, in July2008.

The choir was also invited by the Singapore Education Ministry to be one of the four choirs selected internationally to perform at the Victoria Hall during the recent 2008 World Youth Choral Festival.

Artistic and music director Ian Lim, who founded and conducts the choir, deemed the Singapore stint an honour and credited the international exposure as inspiration for the choir.

“The lyrics of A Land Far Away came from a Japanese poem. At the 2008 Busan Choral Festival and Competition, one of the judges, who is Japanese, commented that we understood the lyrics very well,” Lim said.

He added, “We’d been thinking of having this concert and it took us three months to prepare and rehearse for this; every one was so nervous! We’ve gone through so much, from zero to a champion choir.”

Producer Vincent Kang, who is also part of the choir, was overwhelmed by the audience’s reaction and support.

“We did not know what to expect as this is our first full recital. Previously, we had only collaborated with other choirs or taken part in competitions,” he said.

He revealed that the choir would participate in the World Choir Games in Europe.

“Competitions are a way to push us to go further and try out more things. It broadens our horizon,” he explained.

With two international accolades under their belt, the Dithyrambic Singers is one choir to watch out for in the international scene.

Utusan Malaysia: Atas Nama Kemanusiaan

Papa Rock Malaysia, Ramli Sarip memaku perhatian hadirin ketika mendendangkan lagu'Ziarah'.

Vokal juara Malaysian Idol musim pertama, Jaclyn Victor sememangnya mantap ketika menyampaikan lagu 'Imagine'.

Foto The Star Oleh:KAMARUL ARIFFIN DAN EHFAN SHAH.

Apa yang dapat disimpulkan rata-rata persembahan artis pada malam konsert Malam Amal Atas Nama Kemanusiaan wajar diberi pujian kerana semua penyanyi menyampaikan lagu-lagu mereka dengan penuh penghayatan.
