| International Distinguished Concerts Singers International is comprised of singers from all over the world, and we were privileged recently to have the Dithyrambic Singers from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, grace our stage. The Dithyrambic Singers performed in an all-Whitacre program along with over 360 singers in Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage, Carnegie Hall, on April 17. It was a weekend filled with many eye-opening moments, thanks to Whitacre's insights into his work, and the performance was truly one of the best concerts that DCINY has produced. Wrote Vincent Kang, co-director, about the group's experience: "The rehearsals with Mr. Whitacre have helped our group understand the music better, and making music with him was immensely gratifying. Singing Whitacre's best chorale compositions at Carnegie Hall was truly a dream come true." Eric On April 17, in an all-Whitacre program, DCINY presented the World Premiere of Eric Whitacre's the city & the sea. The work, created as part of the DCINY Premiere Project, is based on the poetry of ee cummings. Whitacre turned five of cummings' poems into five pieces, and they were all sung together in one choral cycle. No stranger to setting poems to music, Whitacre has created works from the writings of many great poets. He took Ogden Nash's short, witty poems about animals and set them to music, resulting in his popular Animal Crackers Volumes I and II. Likewise, several works by Octavio Paz have become his A Boy and a Girl, Little Birds, Cloudburst and Water Night. Rudyard Kipling's Seal Lullaby has also been set to Whitacre's stirring music. All of these pieces appeared on the concert , and the city & the sea received a warm welcome into the choral repertoire. IF YOU think that choir members just stand still and sing at concerts, the Dithyrambic Singers will prove you wrong.
Adding elements of drama to their singing, the group delivered a performance that was an eye-opener, particularly to those new to the choir scene. Many in the audience were stunned when some of the choir members performed a tribal war dance, howling in agony, sobbing hysterically and screaming in madness.
The play of light created a dramatic effect to set the mood for the songs the choir rendered. There were also several costume changes, with the members looking smart in shades of black and red, white and blue, as well as traditional Malaysian motifs.
Titled A Choral Voyage, the performance, held at the KL Performing Arts Centre (KLPac) last weekend, was the choir’s first full recital. The choir was founded in 2005.
The group performed more than 15 songs during the concert, and highlights included the ancient tribal war-inspired Bal-laygi and the thought–provoking A Land Far Away, both of which provided the choir the opportunity to incorporate drama elements.
The latter was composed by the choir’s associate member Ng Shyh Poh with the aim of conveying the message of the brutalities of war through the voice of the victims. Six choir members each took on different roles as victims of war and acted out the emotions that resulted from the horror they had experienced — agony, sadness, fear, and even madness.
The audience was transported to the grasslands of Mongolia by the traditional Mongolian folk song Ba Jun Zan as the choir members mimicked the sound of galloping horses to portray the vigour of Genghis Khan’s famous eight steeds.
A Glimpse of Malaysian brought a sense of familiarity to the audience with its medley of five Malaysian folk songs that showcased the uniqueness of the local culture, including songs we grew up with, such as Geylang Si Paku Geylang.
The Dithyrambic Singers emerged Grand Prix Champion at the 2008 Busan Choral Festival and Competition in November 2008, on the heels of its victorious participation in the 21st Century International Choral Festival, Orientale Concentus, held in Suzhou, China, in July2008.
The choir was also invited by the Singapore Education Ministry to be one of the four choirs selected internationally to perform at the Victoria Hall during the recent 2008 World Youth Choral Festival.
Artistic and music director Ian Lim, who founded and conducts the choir, deemed the Singapore stint an honour and credited the international exposure as inspiration for the choir.
“The lyrics of A Land Far Away came from a Japanese poem. At the 2008 Busan Choral Festival and Competition, one of the judges, who is Japanese, commented that we understood the lyrics very well,” Lim said.
He added, “We’d been thinking of having this concert and it took us three months to prepare and rehearse for this; every one was so nervous! We’ve gone through so much, from zero to a champion choir.”
Producer Vincent Kang, who is also part of the choir, was overwhelmed by the audience’s reaction and support.
“We did not know what to expect as this is our first full recital. Previously, we had only collaborated with other choirs or taken part in competitions,” he said.
He revealed that the choir would participate in the World Choir Games in Europe.
“Competitions are a way to push us to go further and try out more things. It broadens our horizon,” he explained.
With two international accolades under their belt, the Dithyrambic Singers is one choir to watch out for in the international scene.

Beginilah ekspresi penderitaan rakyat Palestin yang cuba digambarkan oleh kumpulan koir Dithyrambic pada Malam Amal Atas Nama Kemanusiaan di Istana Budaya, Kuala Lumpur, malam tadi. Kumpulan tersebut yang dianggotai oleh 20 remaja Cina berjaya mencuri perhatian penonton termasuk Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin; Sultanah Kedah, Sultanah Haminah Hamidun; Timbalan Perdana Menteri, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak dan isteri, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor. Antara artis popular yang turut membuat persembahan ialah Siti Nurhaliza, Ramli Sarip, Jaclyn Victor, Kumpulan Raihan dan Misha Omar.

Persembahan paling menarik dan mantap oleh koir Dithyrambic berjaya meruntun perasaan hadirin.
IBARAT menjadi satu kemestian setiap kali berlangsungnya program amal, pasti disertai dengan konsert dan persembahan artis-artis terkemuka tanah air.
Namun itulah satu sumbangan yang dilakukan oleh golongan seni pada malam Rayuan Amal Atas Nama Kemanusiaan di Istana Budaya, Sabtu lalu.
Majlis tersebut juga merupakan satu bentuk manifestasi bagi meringankan beban golongan masyarakat Palestin yang sedang berperang menentang kekejaman regim Zionis.
Majlis yang dihadiri ramai golongan kenamaan, termasuklah Yang di-Pertuan Agong itu merupakan satu majlis yang mendapat kerjasama daripada Kementerian Perpaduan, Kebudayaan, Kesenian dan Warisan.
Papa Rock Malaysia, Ramli Sarip memaku perhatian hadirin ketika mendendangkan lagu'Ziarah'.
Tirai persembahan dibuka dengan persembahan nyanyian oleh penyanyi tesohor, Datuk Siti Nurhaliza, memang istimewa sekali ketika meyampaikan lagu ‘Suara Sepi’.
Memang tidak perlu dipertikaikan lagi, persembahan Datuk Siti ketika mendendangkan lagu yang dicipta khas oleh Johari Teh dan lirik yang ditulis oleh Habsah Hassan ini nyata berjaya menyentuh hati hadirin yang berada dalam dewan tersebut.
Tidak terhenti setakat itu sahaja, persembahan diteruskan dengan nyanyian lagu bertajuk ‘Ziarah ‘oleh Papa Rock, Ramli Sarip.
Penyanyi bersuara serak basah yang berasal dari Singapura ini nyata berjaya menghidupkan suasana sedih dihati hadirin pada malam itu.
Dengan gaya tersendiri yang tidak perlu diperkatakan lagi, juara Malaysian Idol musim pertama Jaclyn Victor tampil membuat persembahan seterusnya.
Dengan menyampaikan lagu bertajuk ‘Imagine’ nyata persembahan Jac tidak perlu dipertikaikan lagi dengan vokalnya yang sememangnya bagus sekali.
Pengacara pada majlis tersebut, Mahadzir Lokman juga sememangnya berjaya menghidupkan suasana majlis yang bersifat formal pada malam itu.
Vokal juara Malaysian Idol musim pertama, Jaclyn Victor sememangnya mantap ketika menyampaikan lagu 'Imagine'.
Dengan gaya tersendiri personaliti yang pandai fasih bercakap tujuh bahasa ini mampu mengendalikan majlis tersebut berseorangan tanpa cacat celanya dan memang pujian wajar diberikan kepadanya.
Kumpulan nasyid terkenal Raihan turut tidak ketinggalan membuat persembahan menarik pada malam itu dengan menyampaikan lagu ‘Untukmu Palestin’.
Namun disebalik persembahan artis-artis terkemuka tanah air persembahan koir oleh kumpulan Dithyrambic ketika menyampaikan lagu ’Tanahair Yang Jauh’ betul-betul menyentuh perasaan tetamu yang hadir dalam Panggung Sari, Istana Budaya.

Biarpun menggunakan bahasa Mandarin sebagai bahasa perantara dalam persembahan mereka namun semangat dan gaya persembahan yang ditunjukkan nyata hidup dan membuatkan penonton bersorak sebaik persembahan mereka tamat.
Selayaknya persembahan mereka diberi 'markah' tertinggi pada malam tersebut kerana biarpun membuat persembahan dalam bahasa ibunda mereka, namun dari segi gaya berpakaian mereka masih beridentitikan Malaysia iaitu pakaian songket tersarung ditubuh mereka.
Juara Akademi Nasyid yang juga finalis Anugerah Juara Lagu (AJL) ke-24 baru-baru ini, Aiman turut tidak ketinggalan membuat persembahan dengan menyampaikan lagu ’Dusta Berkalang’.
Nyata Aiman bijak membuat pemilihan pakaian yang sesuai apabila kali ini dia tidak lagi tampil sarat seperti dalam AJL yang lalu.
Biarpun vokalnya biasa namun dia wajar diberikan pujian kerana sebagai bakat baru Aiman masih lagi mampu bersaing dengan penyanyi-penyanyi yang lebih senior daripadanya dalam industri hiburan tanahair.
Penyanyi popular, Mawi tidak ketinggalan membuat persembahan pada malam itu.
Seterusnya persembahan nyanyian diteruskan oleh penyanyi yang agak lama menyepikan diri lewat kebelakangan ini, Misha Omar, tampil jelita dalam persalinan berwarna hitam putih yang sesuai dengan lagu yang dinyanyikannya.
Ternyata vokal Misha masih sama dan tidak perlu dipertikaikan lagi ketika mengalunkan lagu Sheila Majid, Hitam Putih Kehidupan.
Finalis AJL kategori Etnik Kreatif, Aiman tampil dengan pakaian yang sesuai ketika menyampaikan lagu 'Dusta Berkalang'.
Baru sahaja pulang dari berbulan madu, penyanyi popular Mawi turut serta menjayakan konsert amal itu.
Raja SMS ini menyampaikan lagu terbarunya, Allah Habibi dengan diiringi kumpulan Aristana sebagai penyanyi latarnya.
Majlis yang berlangsung hampir 2 jam itu diakhiri dengan persembahan monodrama yang meruntun perasaan lakonan Umie Aida dan Sharonizam Noor.
Persembahan yang dipimpin oleh pengarah berkaliber, Erma Fatima ini memang tidak perlu dipertikaikan lagi. Ia berjaya membawa jiwa penonton menghayati dan menyelami perasaan rakyat Palestin yang menderita akibat kematian dan kehilangan orang tersayang.
Acara kemuncak pada malam berkenaan adalah penyampaian sumbangan kepada Dana Atas Nama Kemanusiaan yang berjaya mengumpul RM10.7 juta hasil sumbangan syarikat-syarikat korporat dan dermawan di negara ini.
Wang tersebut akan disalurkan kepada Wisma Putra untuk Tabung Kemanusiaan Rakyat Palestin.

Apa yang dapat disimpulkan rata-rata persembahan artis pada malam konsert Malam Amal Atas Nama Kemanusiaan wajar diberi pujian kerana semua penyanyi menyampaikan lagu-lagu mereka dengan penuh penghayatan.

THE Dithyrambic Singers have once again proven themselves internationally. The Dithyrambic Singers, under the direction of Ian Lim, emerged Grand Prix Champion at the 2008 Busan Choral Festival and Competition recently.
Held from Nov 12 to 15, the 2008 Busan Choral Festival and Competition was organised by the South Korean Choral Institute and supported by the South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports & Tourism, Busan Metropolitan City Government and Korean Tourism Organisation.
The judges comprised an international jury from Belgium, Japan, Argentina, Armenia, the United States and South Korea.
Winning Malaysians: The Dithyrambic Singers won the gold medal in the Mixed Classic and Ethnic (Folklore) categories and were named the Grand Prix Champion.
This year’s competition attracted 40 choirs from 12 countries, including South Korea, China, United States, Japan, Nigeria, Russia, and the South-East Asian nations.
The Dithyrambic Singers topped the Mixed Classic and Ethnic (Folklore) categories to attain the highest score to be awarded champion.
This was the group’s second international victory this year, since their participation in the 21st Century International Choral Festival, Orientale Concentus held in Suzhou, China, in July.

THE Dithyrambic Singers have once again proven themselves internationally. The Dithyrambic Singers, under the direction of Ian Lim, emerged Grand Prix Champion at the 2008 Busan Choral Festival and Competition recently.
Held from Nov 12 to 15, the 2008 Busan Choral Festival and Competition was organised by the South Korean Choral Institute and supported by the South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports & Tourism, Busan Metropolitan City Government and Korean Tourism Organisation.
The judges comprised an international jury from Belgium, Japan, Argentina, Armenia, the United States and South Korea.
Winning Malaysians: The Dithyrambic Singers won the gold medal in the Mixed Classic and Ethnic (Folklore) categories and were named the Grand Prix Champion.This year’s competition attracted 40 choirs from 12 countries, including South Korea, China, United States, Japan, Nigeria, Russia, and the South-East Asian nations.
The Dithyrambic Singers topped the Mixed Classic and Ethnic (Folklore) categories to attain the highest score to be awarded champion.
This was the group’s second international victory this year, since their participation in the 21st Century International Choral Festival, Orientale Concentus held in Suzhou, China, in July.

LOCALS and expatriates alike were served with an auditory feast by the Dithyrambic Singers flown in from Malaysia at the Digadong Hall of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports yesterday.
More than 100 music-lovers both young and old filled up the hall to listen to the over 30-strong choir and solos performing well-known classics by Brahms, Mozart and even more contemporary and recent pieces occasionally accompanied by the piano throughout the night.
The singers were brought to Brunei Darussalam by the Brunei Music Society and the event was mainly sponsored by the Centre for British Teachers (CfBT) Brunei Darussalam.
Apart from classical numbers, the choir also presents Christmas concerts around the Klang Valley annually.
Established in 2005, the Dithyrambic Singers is a semi professional choir located in Kuala Lumpur under the direction of Ian Lim.
Boasting an active membership of 50 students and graduates mainly from the Malaysian Institute of Arts, University of Malaya and University College Sedaya International.
The group's achievements include a Gold Choral Assessment Award from Trinity College London in 2005, silver medals in the Mixed Voice and Folklore categories of the Hong Kong International Youth and Children Choir Festival in 2006.
They were also guest performers for the 2006 World Youth Wushu Convention in Kuala Lumpur and most recently, the ensemble was involved in Beethoven Symphony No 9 Choral performance Istana Budaya together with the National Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Mustafa Fuzer Nawi.
The choir performed earlier in the afternoon in front of a packed crowd.

In the competition among 24 groups from countries in Asia, their participation in both the Folklore Acappella and Mixed Choir Open Category won them two gold medals.
In the Mixed Choir Open Category, they were also the overall category champion.

Their outstanding performance also won them the Special Jury Award at the Grand Final.
The panel of jurors was made up of judges from China, Singapore, Italy, the Philippines and Indonesia.
